Most people like gummy bears, but only some of those people think about the history of those tasty treats. Have you ever thought about how those yummy gummy treats were made? If you want to learn more about gummy bears, then please keep on reading.
The first gummy bear was made by a man named Hans Riegel who worked for a candy company called Kleutgen & Meier. When he was 27, he decided to quit and start his own company. He named his company Haribo. He thought of the name Haribo by taking parts of words and putting them together. The ha in Haribo came from his first name, Hans, the ri came from his last name, Riegel, and the bo came from Bonn, his hometown. Isn't that interesting?!
At first he started to make hard candies, but when the gelatin candy started to get popular, he thought about making his own. After that, Hans Riegel made molds of dancing bears, mixed together some ingredients, and the gummy bears were created! His gummy bears were selling really well and tons of people bought them. Unfortunately, later on, Hans Riegel died in World war 2 but the gummy bears still sold very well.
